A Very Documentary-Style Wedding
Maggie & Will got married in September at the Ralph Connor House. As a documentary-style wedding photographer, it was so much fun to photograph! Not only was the day planned with so much intention behind every little detail, but so much happened. The day had so many twists and turns that it was written about in VOGUE by Maggie herself. I won’t cover the events of the day too deeply here and instead let you read about them directly from Maggie in her article.
What I will tell you about is everything I loved capturing and why their gallery feels so rooted in a documentary-style wedding photography approach.
Coming at this purely from a photography and aesthetics perspective, here are a few things that really set their wedding apart.
The Shot List Was Limited
I always ask couples for their “must have photos” because I want to ensure I capture the moments they care about most with intention and care. I also completely understand wanting a specific vibe, image, or pose documented.
That said, I’ve found that when couples want their images to feel more candid and emotionally driven, a smaller shot list often works best. The more that needs to be captured, the more the focus can shift from being present in the moment to performing for the camera.
Wedding days should be lived in, not directed.
A documentary-style wedding photographer thrives when there’s room to observe rather than orchestrate every image. My job is to move through the day and pay attention to what’s unfolding naturally. I’ll create images that not only align aesthetically with my work, but also reflect the personalities involved and what the day genuinely felt like.
Something to Document
From the moment I arrived at Maggie & Will’s wedding to the moment I left, something was happening. The action never stopped.
While I often recommend building a bit of downtime into a wedding day timeline, a busy day full of movement and activity reflected them perfectly. My job was simply to keep up.
Without a long shot list, I was free to follow the couple around and document the day as it naturally unfolded. The focus was rarely on the camera because there were so many other things to focus on. Music, finishing DIY wedding details, games, speeches, delivering the marriage licence to a local mailbox, walking to the reception, food, drinks, dancing, all took the attention of the couple and guests.
This is where documentary-style wedding photography really comes alive. The best moments usually happen when people are immersed in the experience rather than thinking about being photographed.
Every Detail Matters
One thing the couple did incredibly well was curate a cohesive atmosphere for their wedding day.
The colours they chose already existed naturally within the venue. Tennis ball green carried through the grass, trees, and even parts of the house itself. Vintage pieces were woven in everywhere, guests were impeccably dressed, signs were crafted and collaged by Maggie, the flowers tossed at the end of the ceremony had been collected and dried by her mother, and the apples handed out at the end of the night were picked from a tree in Maggie & Will’s backyard.
I could walk into nearly any room, photograph any guest against any backdrop, and everything felt visually connected.
Even with a documentary-style wedding photography approach, intentional details and aesthetics still matter. Thoughtful styling creates an environment where the story feels cohesive no matter where the camera turns.
Conclusion
Maggie & Will intentionally leaned into a more documentary-style wedding photography approach, and it suited their wedding beautifully.
That said, I also love weddings that lean more editorial, where we carve out time for guided portraits and more stylized imagery. Most of the weddings I photograph naturally blend both approaches together (see more weddings here). Some moments need gentle direction, while others are best left uninterrupted.
The most important thing is creating a wedding day that feels true to you.
These are the kinds of conversations I love having with couples before their wedding day! That way their experience, and the photographs that come from it, reflect what matters most to them.
