Luc and Amanda’s cozy at home winter elopement was everything a winter wedding should be — personal, laid-back, and filled with love. As a Winnipeg wedding photographer who specializes in both film and digital photography, I was so excited to capture their day on 35mm film, medium format film, and digital. From snowy portraits to the coolest dinner party, every moment was so intentional and joy-filled.
At Home Elopement Décor Inspiration
Luc and Amanda had the coziest, coolest at home winter elopement! The day after a big prairie snowstorm, their home was flooded with soft, glowy light. Despite a few delays due to the storm, everything came together perfect, just in time!
Gorgeous flower arrangements by Stone House Creative were scattered throughout the home. Glasses, silver, and sparkly tablecloths caught the winter sun and created the loveliest atmosphere. Guests started filtering in, and, as a documentary photographer, I had so much fun capturing the excitement and anticipation!
Intimate Fireplace Ceremony
The ceremony took place right in front of the fireplace. Amanda even stoked the fire between their vows! It was so sweet to witness the two of them telling each other how much they loved each other. Their cozy at home elopement ceremony felt so genuine — filled with moments you want to bottle up in photography!
Everything was so intentional. When it came time to sign the papers, a friend in the front row simply held up a tabletop on their knee! It felt relaxed and heartfelt in the best way.
Winter Wedding Portraits on Film
After the ceremony, the sun started to sink and it was time to capture some wedding portraits in their snow-covered forest backyard. Even though it was well below -30°C (classic Winnipeg winter!), we still made it out for some stunning images.
As a film wedding photographer, I love getting outside in that golden winter light. We just took a little walk down a path they’ve traveled many times, stopping here and there for a photo. One of my favourites was Amanda’s red glove brushing a tree as we passed it — I may or may not have gotten her to do it a second time after I missed the first one. 🤭
Their coats were custom-made out of blankets by a friend — such fun personal touch! We lasted a full 15 minutes outside, running on pure adrenaline fresh from the ceremony. I shot a mix of digital and medium format film to capture all the classic wedding portraiture before we headed back inside to warm up.
Laid-Back Dinner Party Vibes
When Luc and Amanda first reached out, one of the things they mentioned was that they wanted their at home elopement to feel like a fun dinner party for their closest friends and family. Such a good idea!! The vibes were 🤌🏻🤌🏻
Dinner was made by Fabled Table — and wow, it looked incredible! Each course came with a glass of wine and was introduced by a friend at the “head” table. Their goal was a relaxed evening with amazing food and company — and it was such a dream to document it all using a mix of 35mm film, medium format film, and digital photography.
Film and Digital Wedding Photography Approach
When we had our consultation call, we talked about how the day was going to be laid-back, non-traditional, and that the photography should reflect that! We didn’t put any pressure on the portraits — we grabbed the classic “fridge photo” (couple smiling at the camera) and had fun with a few others. But most of my time there was spent documenting real moments.
I specialize in film and digital photography, using 35mm film for those spontaneous, flash-filled memories, medium format film for timeless portraits and dreamy details, and digital for capturing everything in between. As a documentary photographer, I love blending all these formats to tell the full story of your day.
Since we had some flexibility in the timeline, I was even able to bring out the flash for a big portion of the evening for those fun party photos. Needless to say, I had an absolute blast capturing this cozy, at home winter elopement.
