Lukas and Jennifer’s wedding took place at Hawthorn Estates just outside of Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was so easy to lean into a documentary style photography approach with family and love everywhere.
I practice documentary style photography as well as editorial style photography. I find that weddings focused mainly on creating memories, with a small amount of time allotted to creating timeless, love filled images, end up being my favourite. When the images come from real moments, they carry so much more meaning. That is what I feel with these images. They’re real, full of life and love.
The day was documented primarily digitally with a touch of 35mm film. I’ll always love the timeless, vintage feel that film photography brings to a wedding day.
We started the day at home getting ready with plenty of yummy food made by the mother of the groom. Daughters, aunties, grandmas, and friends all surrounded the bride. It was such a sweet and quiet morning. Documentary style photography is so easy to practice in a setting where people are able to move about and enjoy each others company.
We arrived at Hawthorn Estates for the sweetest first look. There was nothing but love. We explored the grounds and found a few spots to hang out and capture some memories with just the two of them. We were shortly surrounded by more family and took the time to document those relationships.
The wedding ceremony was so beautiful to capture. From the violin as the wedding party entered, to the spinning exit the bride and groom made down the isle. Everything was sweet and gorgeous. Again, the family love was so present.
The rest of the evening was spent walking around the venue, documenting cousins and siblings playing, and friends and family chatting. We ate great food, listened to sweet stories, and danced a lot! One of my favourite things as a photographer is pulling out the flash for some fun-filled dance floor moments. The kiddos always love it too!
